Tinnitus
THE FACTS
Millions of people worldwide suffer from tinnitus - also known as "ringing in the ears". Musicians are at high risk and many well known artists, including Noel Gallagher, Coldplay's Chris Martin, Sting, Will.I.am, Neil Young, Cher, Pete Townshend, Gary Newman and many others are sufferers. Tinnitus affects anyone exposed to loud noise. Members of the Armed Forces, construction workers, concert goers and a whole generation of iPod users are at risk. It is an extremely upsetting condition that can often cause very serious depression and feelings of hopelessnes. In some cases it even leads to suicide! And it is getting more common in our noisy modern world - it is estimated that one in ten people now suffer from this condition.
THE WORK
Music Aid launched the Tinnitus Foundation to increase awareness, and provide resoursces, help and support to sufferers, to report on new discoveries, and to encourage and fund research. Music Aid believes that musicians, music lovers, venue owners, events organisers and local authorities need to be educated on the dangers of loud noise.
THE RISK
Everyone is at risk of developing tinnitus when they visit an event with loud music. When that ringing in ears after a concert doesn´t go away, you have tinnnitus! There is no cure, and once your hearing is damaged it is damaged for life! Music Aid beleives their should be strict public event guidelines and laws, with legal recourse and compensation for victims who have had their hearing damaged by the irresponsible organisers who exposed them to music that is above the established known danger levels.
